On Thanksgiving Day, we hosted our annual Thanksgiving Together event at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Purcellville!

This year, we were able to provide hot, homecooked meals to 208 people in need of food and fellowship!  This included dinner for more than 70 that dined in with us, plus families that took meals home, first responders that we delivered to, and residents at the Winchester Rescue Mission.

The church fellowship hall was filled with all the joy and spirit of the season, and we were blessed to have so many volunteers cook, serve, and deliver food to help make Thanksgiving a special day for all.  Your amazing generosity is what made this day possible!

Thank you, also, to St. Peter’s for always being gracious hosts for this wonderful community event!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends – and thank you again to all the volunteers and donors that help making Thanksgiving truly blessed for so many.

Honoring Our Veterans

Our Day Break Ministry hosted our first ever Veterans Day Luncheon!

We welcomed local veterans to join us at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Purcellville, where we served a catered lunch and honored those that have served and sacrificed so much in the name of freedom.

HeroHomes graciously sponsored the event, and expressed their thanks to the veterans in attendance, as well as sharing about their impactful mission of providing homes to disabled veterans.

There are many highlights from the event, including a display of iconic WWII memorabilia, recognition of the longest serving and oldest veterans in attendance, patriotic songs, and a special guest speaker, Dell Nunaley.

Mr. Nunaley, a former Army Ranger and retired Colonel, gave remarks that highlighted the vital role of America’s veterans in our country’s history, noting that veterans are who we have to thank for the many freedoms we enjoy.

He went on to pose a challenge to the crowd, that while they may no longer be able to serve on the battlefield, they still have some “service life left” and he encouraged them to be leaders in a return to civic mindedness and unity among their fellow citizens. Experiencing real, in-person community at the local level, he noted, is how we feel connection to our neighbors and our fellow Americans.

It was an inspiring day, and we are so grateful to have been able to honor local veterans at this special event. Thank you to our amazing Day Break team that made this possible, to Hero Homes for your sponsorship, and to St. Peter’s for hosting us!

And thank you to all the veterans in attendance and across the country to whom we owe so much. May God bless you and your families.

PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS

A long, long time ago, in a place far, far away, a teenage girl was visited by an angel. The angel gave this poor girl named Mary encouraging news, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28). Mary was greatly troubled, but the angel told her not to be afraid. The angel then explained that she would give birth to a son, who would be called Jesus, and His kingdom would never end. The angel then explained that “no word from God will ever fail.” Mary answered, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

Christmas has many different meanings for different people. For some, it may be a time of sadness and remembrance of a loved one that passed away during the holidays. For others, it may be an overwhelming time of hustle and bustle as they prepare for family events. For Mary, Christmas was the time of receiving the most glorious news the world has ever known.

God had Isaiah prophesy about Jesus and Mary in Isaiah 7:14, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’” The best news that we could ever receive is that God wanted to be with His creation so much that He sent Jesus to us.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, come near to hear from the Lord. We have prepared special Advent devotionals you can receive every day from December 1-24. It’s a great way to prepare for Christmas!

May you be blessed,
Chaplain Wayne Ruckman
